About us

Important feature of this research group is a broad range of activities, from fundamental research of processes and phenomena to application of numerical methods in optimization of utility boiler furnaces and other energy conversion systems.

Main interests of the group focus on mathematical modeling, numerical methods and software development and application for simulation of complex flows, heat and mass transfer and chemical reactions in full-scale energy conversion systems, such as utility boilers and furnaces. Predictions made with such models and codes offer great potential in analysis and optimization of processes to increase energy efficiency, mitigate emissions and improve flexibility of energy systems. Various fields of investigation are covered, such as: turbulence and combustion modeling, modeling of thermal radiation, mathematical modeling of two-phase turbulent flows with heat and mass transfer and chemical reactions, development of user-friendly 3D computer codes and software tools applied to support clean and efficient utilization of solid fuels, problems in renewable energy sources utilization, etc.

In order to comply with up-to-date research in the field, attention is also paid to the application of artificial intelligence (machine learning) methods, as well as development of numerical codes aimed for simulations on GPU computing systems.

    Development of artificial intelligence models for predicting the emission of pollutants from the thermal power plant "Kolubara" based on experimental investigations

    Project entitled "Development of artificial intelligence models for predicting the emission of pollutants from the thermal power plant "Kolubara" based on experimental investigations" (Ref.: 00123168/01-04) was granted on the Public Call on 2022 for the Improvement of Cooperation Between Science and Economy in the Field of Circular Innovations - CIRCULAR VOUCHERS, financial supported by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Ministry of Environmental Protection (https://www.undp.org/sr/serbia/news/nagradene-najbolje-inovacije-u-oblasti-cirkularne-ekonomije-u-srbiji).

    The project was proposed by the "VINČA" Institute of Nuclear Sciences - National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, as the project holder (Principal Investigator: dr. Аleksandar Milićević, Participants: dr. Milić Erić, dr. Zoran Marković and dr. Srđan Belošević) with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade (Participant: dr. Mileta Žarović), in the Consortium with Public Enterprise ”Electric Power Industry of Serbia” (JP EPS) as business sector.

    1st International conference on mathematical modelling in mechanics and engineering

    We attended the 1st International conference on mathematical modelling in mechanics and engineering held at the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade (8.-10. September 2022.) and gave the oral presentation of the work "Parallel computations in fluid dynamics using multicore/manycore processors", printed in Booklet of Abstracts.

    International conference Power Plants 2021

    Our research group attended the International conference Power Plants 2021 held on the 17th and 18th November 2021. in Belgrade, where we presented the two papers.

    2021 Silk Road International Symposium on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application of Energy & Chemicals, 28-29. October, 2021.

    The conference discussed the frontiers in energy and chemical engineering towards a carbon neutral future, and explores new modes of international cooperation among industry, university, and research institutes. About 300 representatives from universities, research institutes and enterprises in China and abroad participated the conference online and on-site (Xi'an Jiaotong University/XJTU, Xi'an and China University of Petroleum, Beijing).

Selected group references

The group published over 63  papers in scientific journals indexed in WoS and Scopus bases, and presented more than 101  paper containing research results on international and national conferences, printed in the full paper proceedings or books of abstracts. Young researchers successfully completed doctoral thesis while working on project the group participated in. More details on completed thesis can be found can be found here. Results produced during the research over the years were successfully implemented in 7  technical solutions, and 1  patent. Published references and succesfully implemented projects attest to the group strength and quality of the research.
